This guy has a pretty wild japanese dragon tattoo on his arm. The japanese dragons never look quite like the dragons from other cultures. These dragons are always a bit more detailed and more animal like than monster like, I think. When it comes to a japanese dragon tattoo, they have many different meanings to them and their meaning really depends highly on how they are depicted. The one shown here, because it shows its claws and has flames around and behind it, stands for power above all us. Some of its meaning may even be derived from the tattoos position on the body.
In ancient Japanese culture, these dragons were considered a sign of great power and it was believed that the dragons were descendents of the Gods. And that Japanese emperors were born of the dragon and thus had some god like powers in themselves as well. But then most every ancient culture in the world had some ancient leaders who believed themselves to be at least part God, or at least that is what they claimed and they would try to convince the people of it. I like the japanese dragon tattoo simply because I find the depictions of the dragons to be very interesting.

Here are fifteen different samples of a Japanese dragon tattoo. While all very traditional they are all very different from each other. There are a lot of dragons from many cultures around the world and the Japanese history may offer the most varied lot of different dragons. These creatures were worshiped by many and are still considered gods of a sort.
