Aphrodite was also known as the goddess of fertility as well as the goddess of fair sailing. As such she is often seen swiming with her celestial totem animal the dolphin. It was this long standing symbolism of mermaid tattoos being identified with the sea that made them the perfect tattoos for sailors, merchants and other sea faring folk. And this tradition continues even today, as sailors in the United States Navy often have the mermaid tattoo placed upon their arms. But, you don’t have to be a citizen of the sea to enjoy a well done mermaid tattoo. They are perfect for anyone who loves the beauty and sexuality that these symbols represent. Here’s another of the possible mermaid tattoos that one could get if they wanted to. Everybody seems to like mermaids for some reason. I have never met anybody who said they didn’t like them. But I wonder why that is? What is it about mermaids that makes us like them? Perhaps we will never know but we like mermaid tattoos, that’s for sure.
